Indoor vs. Outdoor Teak: Choosing for a Phuket Villa
The same timber behaves very differently depending on where it lives. Choosing teak for a Phuket villa starts with one question: is this piece going inside, under cover, or fully exposed to sun and rain?
Fully exposed teak
Teak left outdoors weathers to a soft silver grey as the surface oils oxidise. This is natural and protective, not damage, and many designers choose it deliberately for poolside and garden settings. If you want to keep the original honey tone, the piece needs regular teak oil, which is a commitment rather than a one time job in this climate.
Covered and semi outdoor teak
Furniture under a sala, a covered terrace, or a deep eave gets the best of both. It avoids direct rain and the harshest sun while still living in open air. This is where teak performs most forgivingly and where most villa outdoor furniture should ideally sit.
Indoor teak
Indoor pieces can take a refined sealed or waxed finish because they are not fighting weather. The trade off is that air conditioned rooms are very dry, so the timber must be properly kiln dried to avoid movement when it travels between a humid exterior and a cool interior.
Matching finish to function
A dining table for a covered terrace, a daybed beside a pool, and a console in an air conditioned living room are three different decisions even if they are the same timber. We finish and recommend pieces based on where they will actually live, which is why we ask about the location before the style. More on our approach is on the About page.
